Tortoise Safe Foods List (2026): What to Feed & What to Avoid

Updated July 31, 2026

The golden rule: a tortoise's wild diet is 80%+ weeds, leaves and grasses โ€” high in fiber and calcium, low in protein and sugar. Most "salad fixings" sold in grocery stores are too low in fiber and too high in water. The closer you get to backyard weeds and grazing, the healthier your tortoise.

This list is written primarily for the arid, herbivorous species most people keep โ€” sulcata, Russian (horsefield), leopard, and Hermann's. Red-foot and yellow-foot tortoises are omnivores and need a different diet (more fruit, occasional protein) โ€” see the note at the end.

๐ŸŒฟ Daily staples: feed freely

These are high-fiber, calcium-rich foods that should make up the bulk of the diet. Weeds picked from an untreated yard beat store-bought greens every time.

๐ŸŒฑ Weeds (best choice)

  • โ€ข Dandelion (greens + flowers)
  • โ€ข Plantain (broadleaf/ribwort)
  • โ€ข Clover (white/red)
  • โ€ข Sow thistle / prickly lettuce
  • โ€ข Mallow
  • โ€ข Chickweed
  • โ€ข Nettle (wilted)
  • โ€ข Hibiscus leaves & flowers
  • โ€ข Mulberry leaves
  • โ€ข Grape leaves

๐Ÿฅฌ Store greens (supplement)

  • โ€ข Spring greens / collard greens
  • โ€ข Turnip greens
  • โ€ข Mustard greens
  • โ€ข Endive / escarole
  • โ€ข Radicchio
  • โ€ข Kale (in moderation โ€” oxalates)
  • โ€ข Rocket / arugula
  • โ€ข Watercress
Graze, don't serve salad. For sulcata and other grazing species, allow access to pesticide-free grass (timothy, Bermuda, orchard grass) as a constant fiber source. A pile of grocery lettuce once a day is not a natural diet.

๐ŸŒธ Edible flowers (treat, 1-2x week)

Flowers add variety and are relished. Make sure they are organically grown โ€” no pesticides, no roadside flowers.

Dandelion, hibiscus, rose petals, pansies, nasturtium, calendula, geraniums, clover flowers, lavender (sparingly), prickly pear cactus flowers and pads.

๐Ÿฅ— Occasional foods (small amounts, 1-2x week max)

These are fine as variety but should not be staples โ€” too high in sugar, oxalates, or water:

โ˜ ๏ธ Unsafe / toxic foods โ€” never feed

These are dangerous. Some are toxic, others cause kidney damage, metabolic bone disease, or fatal nutritional imbalances over time.

Toxic plants

  • โ€ข Rhubarb leaves (oxalic acid)
  • โ€ข Avocado (persin โ€” fatal)
  • โ€ข Onion, garlic, chives
  • โ€ข Daffodil, tulip, lily bulbs
  • โ€ข Azalea, rhododendron
  • โ€ข Buttercup (unless dried)
  • โ€ข Foxglove, oleander
  • โ€ข Ivy, mistletoe

Bad "people food"

  • โ€ข All meat & dairy (arid species)
  • โ€ข Bread, pasta, grains
  • โ€ข Processed human snacks
  • โ€ข Citrus fruit
  • โ€ข Tomatoes (leaves toxic; fruit acidic)
  • โ€ข Banana (only tiny treat โ€” binds Ca)
  • โ€ข Any fruit for arid species (sugar)
  • โ€ข Dog/cat food (too high protein)
Iceberg lettuce warning: it isn't toxic, but it is almost pure water with almost no nutrition and can cause diarrhea. Never make it the main diet. Also avoid supermarket "baby salad mix" as a staple โ€” it's too low in fiber.

๐Ÿบ Pellets & supplements

A quality grass-based tortoise pellet (like Mazuri or Komodo) can make up no more than 10-20% of the diet as a supplement, not a replacement for fresh weeds. Dust food with calcium carbonate (no D3 for outdoor tortoises, with D3 for indoor) several times a week, and a reptile multivitamin once every 1-2 weeks.

๐Ÿ”ด Note for red-foot / yellow-foot tortoises

Red-foots are omnivores, not strict herbivores. In the wild they eat fallen fruit, fungi, carrion, and invertebrates. Their captive diet should be ~60% leafy greens, ~25% fruit (papaya, mango, melon, cactus fruit), and ~15% animal protein (high-quality tortoise pellet, occasional earthworm, boiled egg, or low-fat cooked meat) about once a week. Do not feed a red-foot the pure arid-species diet โ€” they need the fruit and protein.
