Sulcata Tortoise Care Guide (2026)
Updated July 31, 2026
๐ Size & lifespan
The African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) is the third-largest tortoise species in the world. Growth is fast for the first 5-10 years, then slows.
| Age | Typical size | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | 2-3 in | ~30 g |
| 1 year | 6-8 in | 1-2 lb |
| 5 years | 10-14 in | 10-20 lb |
| 10 years | 15-20 in | 40-70 lb |
| Adult (15-20+ yrs) | 24-30 in | 80-150+ lb |
Lifespan: 70-100+ years. This is an heirloom pet โ write care instructions into your estate plans.
๐ Enclosure size
Hatchlings can start indoors, but by year 2-3 they need outdoor space in a suitable climate. A 40-gallon breeder tank is a starter only, outgrown within months.
- Hatchling (0-2 yrs): minimum 36"ร18" indoor enclosure (tortoise table, not a tall glass tank โ they don't understand glass and stress).
- Juvenile: 4'ร4' or larger indoor tortoise table, or a heated outdoor shed.
- Adult: an outdoor yard/paddock. Minimum 100 sq ft per adult, with secure walls buried at least 1-2 feet deep (they dig and climb). 80+ sq ft per additional tortoise.
- Climate: outdoor only where nighttime temps stay above ~60ยฐF (15ยฐC) year-round, unless you have a heated night house. In cold climates you'll need a large heated indoor area for winters.
- Burrowing: provide a hide box or a designated burrowing area. Sulcatas dig tunnels several feet long โ they will try to go under fence lines.
๐ก๏ธ Temperatures & UVB
Temperature gradient
- โข Basking spot: 95-105ยฐF
- โข Warm side: 80-85ยฐF
- โข Cool side: 72-78ยฐF
- โข Night: not below 65-70ยฐF
UVB lighting
- โข T5 HO 10-12% UVB bulb
- โข 12-14 hrs/day cycle
- โข Replace every 12 months (even if lit)
- โข Basking distance per manufacturer
UVB is non-negotiable for indoor sulcatas โ without it they cannot absorb calcium and develop fatal metabolic bone disease. Outdoor tortoises in direct sun need no artificial UVB. Always measure with a thermometer and UVB meter, don't guess.
๐ง Humidity
Adults are arid-adapted (40-60% humidity), but hatchlings need higher humidity (60-80%) to grow smooth shells. A humid hide box with damp sphagnum moss or coco coir on the cool side helps prevent pyramiding. Soak hatchlings in shallow 85ยฐF water for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a week for hydration. Adults need a shallow water dish large enough to soak in, changed daily.
๐ฅฌ Diet
Sulcatas are strict grazing herbivores. Their diet should be ~85% grasses and hays, ~10-15% leafy weeds/greens, with a tiny amount of vegetables. No fruit, no animal protein, no dog/cat food.
- Grazing grasses: Bermuda, timothy, orchard grass (pesticide-free lawn is ideal).
- Grass hays for indoor/winter: timothy, orchard, oat hay.
- Weeds: dandelion, plantain, clover, thistle, mulberry leaves.
- Greens in smaller amounts: spring greens, turnip greens, endive.
- Avoid: iceberg lettuce, spinach (oxalates), all fruit, grains, meat, dairy, pellets as a staple (pellets max 10%).
- Dust with calcium carbonate (with D3 if indoor, no D3 if outdoor) several times weekly; multivitamin every 1-2 weeks.
๐ฅ Common health issues
- Metabolic bone disease โ from no UVB / no calcium: soft shell, limp, pyramiding. Preventable, devastating.
- Pyramiding โ raised shell scutes from too much protein, low fiber, dry hatchling conditions.
- Respiratory infections โ from cold/damp conditions; see a reptile vet for bubbles or wheezing.
- Beak/overgrowth โ need a cuttlebone to chew and proper substrate to wear the beak down.
- Impaction โ from eating sand, gravel, or small stones. Use topsoil/sand mix, not fine loose sand or walnut shell.
