Russian Tortoise Care Guide (2026)
Updated July 31, 2026
๐ Size & lifespan
Russian tortoises are a small species โ a big reason they suit keepers without the yard space for a sulcata.
- Adult size: females 8-10 in, males 6-8 in.
- Adult weight: roughly 1.5-3 lb when healthy.
- Growth: full size in 10-15 years; sexually mature around 4-5 years.
- Lifespan: 40-50+ years with good care โ a multi-decade commitment.
๐ Enclosure setup
Russians are active diggers and surprisingly strong climbers and escape artists. Secure the enclosure and give them room to roam.
- Indoor minimum: a 4'ร2' tortoise table or larger for an adult (bigger is always better). Avoid tall glass tanks โ they stress at seeing-through walls and need ventilation.
- Outdoor (ideal in suitable climate): a secure pen of at least 4'ร4' per adult, with walls buried at least 8-12 inches deep (they dig under) and a top lip or cover to prevent climbing over.
- Substrate: a mix of topsoil and playsand or cypress mulch deep enough to burrow in (several inches). Provide a dedicated humid hide. Avoid fine loose sand, walnut shell, and calcium-sand (impaction risk).
- Hides: at least two โ one on the warm side, one on the cool side โ plus a humid hide on the cool side with damp moss/coir.
- Water: a shallow dish large enough to soak in; refresh daily.
๐ก Heat, light & humidity
Temperature gradient
- โข Basking spot: 90-95ยฐF
- โข Warm side: 75-85ยฐF
- โข Cool side: 70-75ยฐF
- โข Night: can drop to ~65-70ยฐF
Lighting & humidity
- โข T5 HO 10% UVB, 12-14 hrs/day
- โข Replace UVB every 12 months
- โข Enclosure humidity ~40-60%
- โข Humid hide 60-70%
Measure with a thermometer and (for indoor setups) a UVB meter โ guessing is how metabolic bone disease starts. Outdoor tortoises in direct sun need no artificial UVB.
๐ฅฌ Diet
Russian tortoises are browsing herbivores that eat a huge variety of broadleaf weeds and leaves in the wild. Their captive diet should be high-fiber, broadleaf weed-heavy, and low in fruit and protein.
- Staples: dandelion (greens & flowers), plantain, clover, sow thistle, mallow, mulberry leaves, grape leaves, endive, spring greens, turnip greens.
- Grazing: access to pesticide-free grasses and broadleaf weeds is ideal.
- Avoid or limit: iceberg lettuce (no nutrition), spinach/chard (oxalates), fruit (no more than an occasional tiny treat โ they're not tropical tortoises), all meat/dairy, grains, and dog/cat food.
- Pellets: a quality grass-based pellet (Mazuri) only as a small supplement (~10%), not a staple.
- Supplements: calcium carbonate (with D3 indoors, no D3 outdoors) dusted on food several times a week; reptile multivitamin every 1-2 weeks.
- Soak in shallow warm water 1-2x weekly for hydration, especially for hatchlings.
โ๏ธ Hibernation
Russian tortoises do hibernate in nature, often 8-16 weeks depending on origin. If you choose to hibernate, the tortoise must be healthy and good weight, with a pre-hibernation vet check, a 2-3 week fast with hydration, and stable cool temperatures (3-5ยฐC / 37-41ยฐF) โ see our full hibernation guide. Hatchlings under 1-2 years and any sick/underweight tortoise should be overwintered awake under lights. Hibernation is optional for a single pet; when unsure, keep them awake.
๐ฅ Health & common issues
- Metabolic bone disease โ soft shell, pyramiding, weakness from insufficient UVB/calcium. Preventable with correct lighting and dusting.
- Pyramiding โ too much protein, dry conditions, fast growth; use a humid hide and a high-fiber weed diet.
- Respiratory infection โ bubbles, wheezing, gaping from cold/damp stress; see a reptile vet.
- Parasites โ wild-caught Russians commonly carry worms; a fecal check at the vet is wise for any new tortoise.
- Impaction โ from eating loose sand or substrate; use a soil/sand mix and avoid fine loose sands.
